Cabinet Minister And Davey Support Solar Panel Industry
Alex Hole, whose company Strenson Solar provides solar panels in Brighton, England, wonders whether new Energy Secretary Ed Davey will do more for his industry than predecessor Chris Huhne did. Departed Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has left his successor Ed Davey a very important issue in his ministerial in-tray: the question of how to adjust the solar power subsidies in the UK.
Mr Huhne resigned on 3rd February 2012 after learning that he was to be charged with perverting the course of justice over a 2003 speeding case. His ex-wife Vicky Pryce has also been charged because of the claim that she accepted his penalty points.
The MP for Eastleigh is no stranger to court cases. Last December his department announced they were halving the 'feed-in-tariff'; a solar PV tariff which paid homeowners for the electricity their home solar panels generated. The cut angered the industry because it was imposed with just six week's notice; 11 days before the end of an agreed industry-government consultation period.
The High Court ruled that the cut was unlawful and the Court of Appeal decreed that the government couldn¡¯t appeal the decision. However, Mr Huhne opted to refer the case to the Supreme Court and the uncertainty means that customers of ours who had solar panels installed between 12th December 2011 and March 3rd 2012 will be unsure whether they will receive the old 43 per kWh rate or the new 21p rate.
New energy secretary Ed Davey comes from a middle-ranking position in the Department of Business, Industry and Skills. This background suggests that he should be aware that as many as 30,000 jobs could be threatened by slashing support for clean energy.
As his previous job's brief included consumer policy, Mr Davey should also be familiar with how uncertainty over the court verdict means that people considering having panels installed are concerned about whether further tariff reductions might suddenly be introduced.
The irony is that most solar panel installers support a reduction in the feed-in-tariffs subsidies as we recognise that the 43p rate was unsustainable. However, we resent the fact that we were given such short notice of the cut in the rate ¨C this resulted in a 'gold rush' period whereby customers rushed to have panels fitted before the original 12th December cut-off point. When this date elapsed there was an inevitable dramatic down-turn in trade.
Perhaps the answer to this lies in the German system of reviewing solar power subsidies every six months based on solar mark-up conditions and take-up rates (The UK tariff system was supposed to be reviewed every year - a long period during which funds reserved for the tariff pot can soon run out if demand suddenly soars).

How Find the Right Power Inverter For Your House
We have all had those problems where we run out of sockets and we purchase an electric strip, and then the next thing we know, we've had a power outage. It's also a problem when you're out in the garage or out in the yard and you want to use some electrical device for music or lights or power tools, and you find out that you don't have an extension cord, or that in order to hook up an electrical system, you would have to hook up extension cord after extension cord. How are you supposed to bring these basic amenities from inside, as well as tools and real necessities for work, outside without a hassle? The answer is to use a power inverter for the house. It's an easy and in the long term inexpensive solution. Not only can you save money, but you also can save energy.
Trying to find the right power inverter for your house can be a little daunting. The first thing you want to figure out is how you are going to use your inverter. If you are thinking that you are going to use your inverter in your garage to power tools and maybe a radio television, you would find that the 1,000 volt model is perfect for your needs. When you are thinking that you will want to hook up a computer or very large tools, you might want consider moving up to a 1,500 model. Another thing to keep in mind is that the higher wattage you have, the better the quality of your electricity. Problems such as lines in television receptions can be easily resolved with a good, high power converter.
For people who are thinking about a power inverter for their house for professional reasons, the higher wattage models are always the best. This goes for entertainers and woodworker, mechanics, and other professionals who work with tools and materials. The higher wattage inverters are going to give you no noise, no buzzes or mechanical sounds. It is completely silent.
A good power inverter for your house is going to have a fan for cooling, as well as reset buttons for when the inverter cuts out. If you are interested in DC to AC power adaptation, you need to go with the smart choice, especially if you have high expectations for how you get your power. Any person who needs an inverter should make sure that he or she goes online and does some shopping for low cost and fast delivery.

Green Energy - Plant Proteins Power Solar Panel
This new solar panell really is green. Instead of using semiconducting silicon, proteins from plants transform light into electricity.
Physicist Andreas Mershin, at Massachusetts Institute for Technology, and his colleagues say they've simplified the production of plant-based solar cells so that any lab can make them. Mershin hopes these biological solar panels could provide power in places that currently have no electricity.
"People have been growing their own food for millennia," he says. "I think it's time to start growing our own solar power."
Plants make sugars using energy from the sun in a process called photosynthesis. Protein complexes convert the light energy into electrons, which drive the plant's sugar-producing factories.
These plant proteins are tuned to maximize the sun's energy. Practically all of the sunlight that hits them gets converted to electrons. Commercial home solar panels struggle to match this efficiency because they can't absorb all wavelengths of visible light.
Mershin wanted to hijack the efficient electron generators in plants to generate electricity for people. But to build a working solar panel using proteins, he had to stabilize the proteins on the surface so that they perform just like they do in cells. And he had to attach enough of them to generate a measurable current.
Mershin harvested one type of light-collecting protein complex from photosynthetic bacteria. Suspended in a stabilizing solution, the photosynthetic protein complex maintained its shape and function.
He painted the protein solution on a glass slide covered with nano-sized rods of zinc oxide, a common ingredient in sunscreen. The rods hold more protein than the flat surfaces commonly used to make photosynthetic solar panels - enough to give the panel a faint green tinge.
The bio-solar cell converted about 0.1% of sun's energy into electrical energy - 10,000 times more efficient than previous biosolar cells. Mershin says his plant-based solar cells will never match the conversion efficiencies of commercial solar panels. But even increasing the efficiency to 1% could make these plant-powered panels useful for people in the developing world who have no electricity, he adds.

Market warming to cheaper solar panels
Country's renewable energy sector could be approaching a tipping point as solar panel become affordable for homes and offices.
The involvement of large power companies is shaking up the sector and bringing down prices.
This week Elemental Energy, half- owned by giant power company Meridian Energy, will start leasing solar panels and micro wind turbines to its customers, allowing businesses to treat the cost as a tax deductible expense and considerably improving the technology's economic viability.
The total cost of installing solar panels, the most viable renewable energy system for urban environments, is in the range of $9 to $13 per watt of power they produce, according to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.
That means a system producing 2kW of electricity, enough to power an electric heater, would cost $18,000 to $26,000. And the bigger the system is, the more it costs.
But a similar system would have cost about $40,000 four years ago, so prices are falling rapidly.
Those high prices meant renewable energy systems, which include micro hydro plants as well as wind and solar systems, were largely confined to remote locations where the cost of running power lines to connect a property to the electricity network was prohibitively high.
The small number of systems being installed also made the business infrastructure which supported the industry comparatively inefficient.
"The supply chain in New Zealand has been very long, from manufacturer to importer/distributor to reseller and then you need someone to install," said Brendan Winitana, chairman of the Sustainable Energy Association of NZ.
"It's been too long and everyone wants to clip the ticket on the way through. So the final cost to the consumer is high. That makes it harder to recoup that money [through power savings] over time."
That is changing as bigger players enter the market and start to cut out the middlemen, building vertically-integrated companies which do everything from importing the equipment to installing it. The volume of work they do also gives them better economies of scale, allowing them to reduce prices.
The largest of these so far is Elemental which was formed as a joint venture between its senior managers and Meridian last year.
The company has taken an aggressive stance on price right from the start, according to its managing director, Toby Littin.
"When we started retailing in September last year we were about 40% below the current price of most installed systems and we put a lot of price pressure on our competitors. And a lot of them have been responding, so prices have declined," he said.
Other large players, such as Vector, which is currently conducting trials of micro turbine systems, are also looking closely at how they could become involved in the renewable energy market, so competition is likely to increase.
Littin said Elemental customers who leased solar panels or wind turbines would pay for its installation and non- removable equipment such as wiring, but Elemental would own the equipment and any associated kit such as an inverter.
Most leases would run for between five and 10 years, he said.
The viability of the systems is also being helped by a change of attitude among power companies over how much they will pay for surplus electricity produced by renewable systems.
Solar panels produce electricity only when the sun is shining, but that may not be when the customer needs it. The solution is to either store the surplus electricity in batteries, which are expensive to install, or sell it into the electricity network.
Until recently many power companies would pay far less for the power they received from a customer's solar panels than they would charge for any power the customer drew from the network.
Now some power companies are equalising their rates, which dramatically reduces the time it takes for a renewable system to pay for itself through savings on the power bill.
But this can vary dramatically depending on where the customer was located.
Littin said that in major centres such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, where the cost of grid electricity (including line charges) was quite low, it could take 20 or 30 years for a renewable system to pay for itself.
But in areas such as Northland, East Cape and Southland, which had high line charges, systems could pay for themselves in 10 to 15 years.
Business customers could usually expect solar panel price to pay for themselves in 10-15 years, and if they were in a windy location where they could install a turbine, that could come down to five years.

What Is Solar Power and Effect
Basically, solar power is energy that is actually captured from the sun. Although the sun is millions of km away from earth, if we had the ability to harness all the energy coming from the sun, there is more than enough energy there to provide all the power we need for the entire the world. In fact, there is enough energy to provide plenty of power for 10,000 earths. While you can use solar energy for a variety of appliances and other items, you have to realize that this is different than using this power to make heat.
There are 2 different principles that are used with solar power. If you want to make hot air or hot fluids, then solar thermal principles are used. However, if you want to product electricity, photovoltaic principles are used instead. If you want to produce solar power, there are four components that are needed, including a battery, a charge controller, a solar panel, and an inverter.
It is the solar panels that actually get the radiation from the sun and use it to charge up the battery. Then, the charge regulator actually makes sure that the battery charges as it should. Of course, probably the most important pieces of equipment are going to be the solar panels and usually they output power in watts. These panels can be wired in a variety of ways, although usually parallel or series wiring is done to either increase the amperage or the voltage. So, are there benefits to using solar energy? Yes! There are a variety of amazing benefits to using solar energy. In fact, many people all over the world are already using this type of energy to supply their electricity.
As long as the sun is hanging there in the sky, we will be able to have the power that solar energy produces. In fact, there is so much power there, more than ten thousand times the amount of energy we need is available. You should learn as much as possible about solar energy so that you will know about the great benefits offered and how your life will change for the better if you decide to go with solar energy instead of using other power sources.
Conclusion
Whether you have a business or a home, you¡¯ll find that solar energy can offer many advantages for both. Solar power is one of several alternative fuel power sources that is low-cost and renewable. From a business perspective this can add to the bottom line tremendously. From the home perspective using this can cut down on expenses. Since solar energy is friendly to the environment, you will not have to worry about toxins or pollutants from this type of power and you won¡¯t have to worry about the issue of global warming either.

Protect the development of polymer plastic solar cells
What appears to be a new universal technique to decrease the work function of a conductor in printable electronics has led to the development of the first completely plastic solar cell.
Bernard Kippelen and scientists at Georgia Institute of Technology have spread an ultrathin layer of a polymer, about 1 to 10 nm thick, on the surface of a conductor to produce a strong surface dipole. The interaction turns air-stable conductors into low-work function, efficient electrodes. The team used commercially available polymers that can be easily produced from dilute solutions in solvents like methoxyethanol and water.
After introducing what appears to be a universal technique to reduce the work function of a conductor in printable electronics, a team led by Georgia Tech's Bernard Kippelen has developed the first completely plastic solar cell.
"These polymers are inexpensive, environmentally friendly and compatible with existent roll-to-roll mass production techniques," said Kippelen, director of Georgia Tech's Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE).
The emerging field of printed electronics technology is anticipated to grow quickly over the next 10 years. However, a major challenge lies in low-cost manufacturing of printed electronics in ambient conditions.
The technology requires conductors, such as calcium, lithium or magnesium, with a low-work function to create light or energy by injecting or collecting electrons. These conductors are chemically very reactive. Once exposed to moisture and oxygen, they oxidize and stop functioning, which is why electronics in solar cells and TVs, for example, need to be covered with a rigid, thick barrier such as glass or expensive encapsulation layer.
Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed the first completely plastic solar cell.
"Replacing the reactive metals with stable conductors, including conducting polymers, completely changes the requirements of how electronics are manufactured and protected," Kippelen said. "Their use can pave the way for lower cost and more flexible devices."
Kippelen's team evaluated the performance of the polymers in organic LEDs and organic thin-film transistors using their universal technique. They developed the first completely plastic solar cell.
"The polymer modifier reduces the work function in a wide range of conductors, including silver, gold and aluminum," said Seth Marder, chemistry professor and associate director of COPE. ¡°The process is also effective in transparent metal oxides and graphene.

Pure sine wave inverter operation recommendations
It is for a fact that many people have incurred losses as a result of using a faulty power Inverter on their appliances. A poor quality Inverter charger, no matter how low it costs, should never be considered lest you want to completely damage the powered appliance. There is a rule book that guides people when purchasing a power inverter. A rule of thumb in this book is to always purchase Sine Wave Inverters especially when the powered device requires a high supply of power. This article is specially designed to give you clear reasons as to why Sine Wave Inverters are the best for you.
First, you have probably heard of how some power Inverters are known to produce power that is cleaner than others. With the Sine Wave Inverters, the power that is delivered to the grid source is the same that is supplied to your device. This means that the Pure Sine Inverter produces a clean power. On the other hand, a distorted square wave form is produced by the modified Inverter which costs considerably cheaper. In the real sense, calling it the modified "sine" wave Inverter can be quite misleading since in the real sense, this Inverter does not produce any sine wave. In engineering jargon the Inverter would go by the name, the modified square wave.
You will find that, when a modified Inverter is used, 5% of home appliances will not work. You may observe rolling lines on your TV screen or computer when using the modified Inverter. The main disadvantage of using this type of Inverter as opposed to the true Sine Inverter, however, is that, it is unreliable and can damage devices. This happens since there is a lot of abnormal heat dissipated making the motors as well as transformers to have a reduction in efficiency of up to 20 percent.
Moving on to the advantages of pure sine wave inverter, the wave form is a pure sine. This means that there is very minimum harmonic distortion. This facilitates a supply of clean power capable to power even high voltage devices like microwaves in a cooler, quieter and more effective manner. If you are using fans, then audible and electrical noise is dramatically reduced. This means that the Pure Sine Inverter allows you to play your audio amplifiers, answering machines and any other audio devices without noticeable electrical interference.
It should be noted that there are sensitive equipment that must be powered by the Pure Sine Inverter. These include: laptops, stereo, fluorescent lightings that have electronic ballasts, laser printers, photocopiers, digital clocks and even some sensitive battery charges of cordless tools plus many more. If you use Sine Wave Inverters in printing, you will prevent glitches or weird print outs since there is a consistent power supply.
Furthermore, if you use the wrong Inverter to power your laptop it may crash. In addition, the monitors usually exhibit a lot of unnecessary noise when some Inverters other than the Pure Sine Inverter are used.- DC AC Power inverter
If you want to protect your appliances and avoid compromising on their efficiency levels think of sparing more money for a Pure Sine Inverter, the reward will be ultimately worthwhile.
